Early Education (PreK & Elementary)

Pre School

For all grade levels, we offer an extremely rigorous and challenging curriculum.  Our goal is not only to teach content and skills, but also the learning process involving critical and analytical thinking as well as decision-making and problem-solving.

Pre Kindergarten is a great opportunity to build the foundation for problem solving in a fun and special environment.  For most, this is the first school experience and we want to ensure that it is positive and prepares them for Kindergarten.  For our three and four year old students, we focus on developing social skills, letter and number recognition, phonemic awareness, as well as introductory reading.  We also emphasize hands-on learning experiences which promote emergent literacy and math skills that help build a solid foundation.  In parallel, the children develop an understanding of God’s love by attending chapel and having Christian education, promoting a love and respect for others.  Our goal is to send the children to Kindergarten fully prepared for not only the educational piece and necessary social skills, but also with the excitement and enthusiasm for learning which will launch them into a successful school career.

As part of the curriculum, we offer and extensive Enrichment program, which includes:
  • Foreign Language
  • Physical Education
  • Hands-on science lab
  • Computers and Technology
  • Art
  • Music
  • Library
  • Drama
  • Gardening

Elementary School

BFSMS Elementary School is for students in Kindergarten through 4th Grade.  We focus on educating the whole child and the following is a snapshot of how we achieve this.

The foundation of the curriculum follows the Core Knowledge, not to be confused with Common Core.  Core Knowledge is a project based, integrated curriculum, which enables students to create connections from one subject to another.  For instance in 1st grade, the students may learn about Modern Day and Ancient Mexico.  This subject is clearly covered in History and Geography but is also woven into Science studying the Geographical Features of the Earth’s Surface, linking back to Maya, Inca and Aztec Civilizations. It is then covered in Language Arts, with Hispanic Folktale, and in Music, teaching the students traditional Mexican songs and in Art, creating pieces of Mayan and Inca art.  This approach allows each subject to build on each other, so the children can better understand and link the concepts.

We use Singapore Math, which focuses on students not just learning, but also mastering certain math concepts each year.  This approach removes the practice of drills and places a greater emphasis on helping students understand the concept on a deeper level, not just memorization.

Additionally, we include STEM as part of the curriculum.  Standing for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, which are focused on together not only because the skills and knowledge in each discipline are essential for student success, but also because these fields are deeply intertwined in the real world and in how students learn most effectively.  STEM is an interdisciplinary and applied approach that is integrated with hands-on, problem-based learning.

The children also receive Christian teachings which are included as part of the core curriculum as well as attending Chapel on Monday and Friday mornings.

We also offer extensive Enrichment programs, which include:
  • Computers and Technology
  • Art
  • Music
  • Library
  • Gardening
  • Foreign Language
  • Physical Education
  • Hands-on science lab
