We are proud to celebrate 20 years of educating students! There are several key factors that have contributed to our success over two decades, and one of the most critical is having exceptional teachers in place. Our faculty is dedicated to our students and through their experience and within our small class sizes, they are able to provide rigorous and individualized instruction to help each student. This environment enables students to work to their full potential, develop their love of learning, and ultimately be successful.
Another key factor in our successful academic environment is our dedication to educate the whole child. We want our students to be well-rounded and be exposed to as many subjects as possible to help them develop all aspects of their interests and capabilities. Through an excellent curriculum, a broad offering of enrichment classes and an exceptional Fine Arts program, students are able to engage their minds and talents in all ways.
The Middle School at BFSMS is designed to ease the students through the transition from elementary school, and help them gear up to the college preparatory classes of high school in a safe, nurturing and supportive environment. Our goal is to provide a positive atmosphere, both academically and socially, enabling students to develop their confidence and find their voice.
The middle school's curriculum is content driven. By the end of each school year, students are expected to accomplish specific performance goals in each area of the curriculum. Student performance is closely tracked by the teachers throughout the year, ensuring they stay on track to be successful.
The middle school offers E.D. Hirsch Core Knowledge Curriculum and STEM academic subjects that are enriched with the fine arts, foreign language, and physical education. Our teachers use a variety of teaching methods to address the various learning styles of students.
One of the core teaching styles used in Middle School is The Harkness Table method. In this collaborative learning classroom, all students are seated around one table, allowing everyone seated to see the eyes of everyone else at the table. No student is left out of the discussion. Classmates at the table learn by discussing their thoughts and ideas with their teacher and each other, rather than by just taking notes. Students are encouraged to challenge ideas, and to collaborate rather than compete with each other. Teachers, also seated at the table, are participants in classroom discussions, guiding students without lecturing. In this way the teacher is demonstrating to the student how to learn, rather than just what to learn. Collaborative learning teachers excel at asking questions that excite inquiry. The more students want to know, the more they learn.
Additional teaching methods include hands-on activities, lectures, research, technology and many cross-curriculum activities. Technology and Christian Education are integrated throughout the curriculum.
